First Engineering has led the market in investing in new generation plant and equipment, which enables the business to be more cost effective and provide a higher quality output. Owning a substantial fleet of on-track machines, the company was the first in the UK to purchase the most advanced tamping and lining machines from Plasser & Theurer of Austria, one of the world's leading suppliers of specialist on-track equipment. It has continued to invest over the last year, with the latest equipment due to arrive in early 2003. Once these machines are delivered, First Engineering will have the largest fleet of new generation tampers on the UK rail network.
First Engineering was also the first company in Great Britain to buy a mobile flash butt welder. The introduction of the Plasser and Theurer APT 500L marked a significant and important advance in flash butt welding technology. The machine is also designed to meet the increasing specifications required by international railway engineering standards.
