ESS SHORCO
NEW COMPANY FORMED

On 2nd April this year, the Peterhouse Group merged two of its companies, ESS and Shorco to form a new united company that offers a total safety solution and makes it one of the largest health and safety providers in the UK.

Operating from branches in Wellingborough, Leeds, Newcastle and Brentwood, the new business will continue to grow in what is a very demanding marketplace.
Bringing together the diverse and complete range of services from safety consultancy to the supply of safety equipment, will enable the new company to play a leading role in the future development of construction, manufacturing, utilities, and other industry sectors by providing a total safety solution.
Established for over 25 years, the combined depth of specialist expertise and resources enable ESS Shorco to provide innovative solutions to today's safety needs and the network of four regional safety centres and 19 regional training facilities gives it the ability to serve the whole of the UK providing a local convenient service.
The new ESS Shorco is made up of 5 core divisions:

  • Health & Safety Training,
  • Safety Support and Management,
  • Safety Equipment Hire,
  • Safety Equipment Sales,
  • Safety Equipment Service,

The new company is headed up by Colin Stanley as Managing Director and his team of five Directors (see organisation structure).
January 2002 saw the opening of a new, £2m purpose built corporate head office and training centre in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Occupying 2.65 acres, the new complex offers a state of the art technical service workshop area, open plan office accommodation with meeting and conference suites, and a centre that provides the very latest in training facilities. Designed to deliver 'safety training for the future', the new 28,000 sq ft centre sets new standards in facilities and will ensure the 25,000 delegates trained by ESS Shorco this year in over 50 different subjects will receive the very best training in the surroundings specified to suit course delivery. The practical elements of the training are carried out in a 'safety simulated area' suitable for all weather conditions. The indoor confined space and working at heights training centre has been designed with working situations in mind. The result is a real, live experience of training in a safe, controlled environment. Outside there is a dedicated road and street works training area, like the indoor practical area, capable of running courses simultaneously. ESS Shorco is committed to ensuring that, not only are the delegates equipped with the very best knowledge enabling them to work as safely as possible, but also that the surroundings make their time spent with ESS Shorco a rewarding and enjoyable one.
The Brentwood Branch unveiled its new facilities in March, redeveloped to accommodate a growing demand for health and safety training in the Southeast. The new training centre, managed by newly appointed Branch Manager, Phil Cresser, offers three fully equipped classrooms with coffee lounge and canteen area and, as with all regional training centres, the practical area simulates real, live training. Conveniently situated just off junction 29 of the M25, the complete range of ESS Shorco services are available providing total support to many long-term contracts such as the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
The current restructuring of the Leeds branch will also be a key factor in the planned strategic growth of the new company. Claire Angus, previously Brentwood Branch Manager, has relocated to manage the Leeds operation where the safety equipment hire division has been centralised providing a fast efficient customer service to a demanding marketplace. Plans to relocate the Leeds and Newcastle branches to new facilities in the near future are consistent with the strategy for branch development and will enable the business to continue to develop its presence in the North of England.
