Performance Overview

Context
We recognise that as a financial services company we have the potential to impact on the environment in two distinct areas.

1. Operational Activity Impacts
These include the direct impacts from buildings we occupy or from properties under our management within the property investment portfolio. Direct impacts include energy and water, as well as those that result from day-to-day consumption of goods and services e.g. use of paper. Our performance with respect to our property portfolio is shown separately.

2. Commercial Activity Impacts
These include the indirect impacts arising from our commercial activities and include socially responsible investment, in companies and property, and our relationship with suppliers.

Performance Highlights since December 2000

• The incorporation of environmental considerations into the procurement activities across the UK businesses.

• Prudential property investment division, PruPIM, becoming the first property investment management company in the UK to gain the Institute of Energy's Energy Efficiency Accreditation.
• Implementation of an eco-efficiency and waste management programme which continues to achieve substantial cost savings and reductions to our environmental footprint.
