The business – Amlin Bermuda

Operating structure

The Amlin Bermuda operating structure is shown opposite. The Bermudian team is made up of a combination of former Amlin London underwriters and local employees.

During 2008, we continued to invest in our team. The business now consists of 25 people, including six underwriters. The development of the team reflects the transition from a new startup to a more established operation. In August 2008 John Andrews stepped down as Underwriting Director and was replaced by Rob Wyatt, who joined from the Amlin London team. Rob has worked with Amlin for over 12 years and has previous working experience in Bermuda.

In January 2009, we appointed Richard Neame Class Underwriter for Specialty Lines, focusing on proportional and special risks. Richard was previously at XL Re Bermuda, where he was Vice President of the Special Risks division. This is a new underwriting position reflecting the continued development of Amlin Bermuda and the additional opportunities anticipated in 2009.

From an operational perspective, two new key positions were created in the year, recognising not only the expected growth of Amlin Bermuda, but also alignment with other management changes across the Group. In November 2008, a claims manager, Chris Brittain, was appointed, with the aim of building and developing a local claims function. Chris is an experienced claims professional from the Amlin London team and therefore brings Group experience and expertise to the new role. In January 2009, Elizabeth Murphy was appointed as our first Chief Financial Officer. Elizabeth has significant finance and local market experience that will be invaluable as we look to develop our operation.

Over the long term we recognise that for Amlin Bermuda to be successful it must have a strong local core and we have placed significant emphasis on identifying and recruiting high calibre local recruits. However, it is also important to leverage existing Amlin business and operational experience – both in terms of practices and values.
