Developing employees for the long term

Case studies

Leadership Development Programme candidates, Kagiso Molefe and Edwin Dintwe

Kagiso Molefe, currently the acting shift supervisor at Helam, is one of the two second-year Leadership Development Programme candidates at the mine. Being a senior level employee, he has another three years to complete the five-year programme.

Molefe strongly recommends the programme due to its well rounded personal development approach. As his work involves ensuring communication between employees and management, the programme has equipped him with effective communication skills to enable him to communicate both ways. Molefe concludes that the Leadership Development Programme adds genuine value based on the numerous skills he has acquired including: teamwork, leadership, effective timekeeping, dealing with absenteeism, problem solving, decision making and lateral thinking.

Edwin Dintwe, a locomotive driver, has one year to go to complete his three-year progamme as he is currently in the junior pool. Although he is not in a leadership position yet, he has learnt timekeeping skills, effective communication and stress management. Edwin aims to attain his blasting ticket from the MQA.

There are currently a total of seven candidates on the Leadership Development Programme at Helam, two second-year and five first-year candidates. The classes are part-time and take place at the training centre on the mine.
