Key features of 2009

Management at Cullinan

Governance

  • New order mining rights are in place for Cullinan and Koffiefontein. Mining rights applications were made to the DMR for the fissure mines: Star, Helam and Sedibeng. The acquisition of Kimberley Underground from De Beers will complete shortly after the new mining rights are issued to Petra.

  • No fatalities
  • An excellent health and safety record with a 50% improvement on LTIFR
  • 4,099 employees and contractors
  • Implementation of a leadership development programme
  • Formalisation of the training function and optimisation of the central training centre
  • Standardisation of the HR development and management processes through the introduction of the VIP system

Economic

  • Gross production of 1,099,367 carats, a fivefold increase (2008: 200,287 carats)
  • Conclusion of the acquisition of Cullinan in South Africa by the Petra Diamonds Cullinan Consortium
  • Acquisition of 75% interest in Williamson in Tanzania
  • Two very rare and valuable blue diamonds recovered at Cullinan - sold for US$18.2 million
  • Group resource (gross) of 262 million carats
