The Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Lloyd’s
have enjoyed a close relationship dating back to the
formative years of both organisations, both being
fundamental to the UK’s maritime environment.
Lloyd’s established a fund to encourage the building
and operation of lifeboats to counter ship losses.
This fund provided an impetus to early lifeboat
building and helped pay for almost 30 lifeboats
up to the 1820’s.
Over 175 years later, the RNLI is a world-renowned
charity at the cutting edge of safety at sea. Amlin
continues the Lloyd’s tradition by working closely with
the Institution and the charity’s brokers, E. Coleman
& Co, to underwrite a range of insurance policies.
Amlin’s relationship with the RNLI began in 1983
when we took on insurance of the substantial motor
fleet through our Summit subsidiary.
In 2001 we were a primary choice to work closely
with Coleman’s in restructuring the portfolio to
provide a tailored package of cover specifically to
meet the needs of the modern RNLI. With assets
including some 470 lifeboats, 230 lifeboat stations
and 430 vehicles and with around 4,000 volunteers
across the United Kingdom and the Republic of
Ireland, today’s RNLI has a wide range of
insurance requirements.
In 2004 Amlin was involved with the liability
insurance programme and provided a variety of
specialised covers including marine property and
catastrophe. Andrew Freemantle MBE, RNLI chief
executive confirms:
“We are very satisfied with the service that we
have received from our insurers Amlin, particularly
the speed and efficiency of claims processing.”
The combination of lifeboat, crews and support
ensure that the RNLI maintains its tradition of
providing a comprehensive sea rescue service.
Amlin are proud to have been selected to
underwrite insurance for the Institution
and remain part of that tradition.
