The global container trade has grown by 600% since
1980 and, whereas the largest container vessel built in
that year was 3,500 TEU (20 foot equivalent units), there
is now a 9,200 TEU vessel on order. Hong Kong is the
largest container handling port in the world, lifting
19 million containers in 2002.
